ORDINARY OBJECTS REINVIGORATE INTEREST IN CIVIL RIGHTS HISTORY

Despite the extraordinary stories of the Civil Rights Movement, even the most important events lose their impact over time. With the social issues our country faced in 2020 and 2021, and continues to face today, these stories are more important than ever.

ORDINARY OBJECTS. EXTRAORDINARY STORIES. It’s a new way to engage a generation enthralled with sharing the mundane details of life and to take advantage of their way of consuming information.

There’s nothing extraordinary about a backpack. Until you hear about how a young John Lewis packed it with jailhouse supplies because he expected to be arrested. He was beaten and hospitalized instead.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE OBJECTS

A fashionable dress takes on new meaning when you see someone wearing it as they are being dragged away by police and sprayed with firehoses.

A baseball seems pretty basic. Until you learn that Jackie Robinson was the first Black player to integrate the Major Leagues nine years before schools were desegregated.

The power of “Ordinary Objects” attracted new users, inspired them to spend time on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail website, increased search and social traffic and evoked an emotional response.
